A gut renovation becomes a dreamlike respite

This Tiburon townhouse was in need of a facelift and some loving care. Architect Ravi Anand was clever in offering the best use of every square inch of space in this 2000 sq ft. duplex that gained entirely new materials. We created a bright, dreamlike environment and gave the client a respite from the outside world.

Creating a fresh start in a remodel

This newly liberated bachelor wanted an elegant environment to begin his next chapter. Located in a 1920's building in Noe Valley, San Francisco, this space was renovated yet maintained it's original charm and details. Filled with golds and neutral colors to enhance the natural light filled rooms, its an inner sanctum reflecting the spirit of the owner: The Elegant Bachelor.

When this friend and client moved from his large house, he  scaled down by more than half the size of his previous space.  With his impressive art collection, antiques and collectibles, he moved into this loft on the lake with spectacular views and a wrap around deck affording space for his many rose bushes and outdoor plants. Its become an artful place where you feel as if you're floating on air in this elegant space.

Color reflects nature

Nature informs every aspect of this small house in Tiburon with it's passionate red walls and elements collected from various parts of the world. Creating a space for reflection and imagination inspires our soul. This traveler is unafraid of color and basks in combining collections with found objects in nature and those that hold personal meaning discovered in her travels.

A quiet space with indoor and outdoor charm, this cottage bespeaks the owner: a lover of silver, Southwestern artwork and personal art collections. Nature informs this space with light and vegetation in every window. With the color scheme inspired by Mother Nature, it is simultaneously vivid and restful.

A wine enthusiast in a mid century downtown loft

When this financial planner and wine collector moved into a mid century loft in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, the task at hand was how to store over 1,000 bottles of wine in the space. With designated areas for office and living, we installed wine racks that covered the perimeter of the living space which enabled easy access to each bottle, yet never compromised the details of the rest of the loft space. Despite it's refrigerator-like temperatures, this is a man cave at its best!

Dae advertising lets the light in

This agency moved to an upper floor of their downtown San Francisco location, gaining more light and space for them to grow. With clean modern lines, we created a space that inspires and motivates the team to drop into new vignettes where they can share ideas and brainstorm their creativity.

create an environment that nurtures your spirit

Vanessa Murphy Interiors can help you to create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere that encourages ambitions and heartfelt desires. Creating a home where you can express yourself is a place where you find inner calm. Inspiration comes in many forms: travel, philosophy, religion and nature.  We can tailor your environment to suit your individual style where you'll feel truly at home, whether it's found in blooming branches or collections of art....each one of us resonates to our own uniqueness of what informs our individual sense of the sacred and creating a retreat at home.

let us help you create your own inner sanctum

Vanessa Murphy found her way to Interior Design by way of a passion developed through a strong arts education and an international career in style production. Her respect for interior spaces is represented by the multifaceted design experience that she has cultivated in her career. Her objective is to inspire a client to find beauty, function and a home to live in that personifies their taste.

After graduating from Traphagen School of Fashion and the Fashion Institute of Technology, Vanessa was privileged to work under mentors who were instrumental in developing her own focused eye and attuned sense of style. She apprenticed with Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum, and worked on several books that accompanied Vreeland’s reknown Costume Institute exhibitions.  She went on to style and produce fashion shows in Paris with Issey Miyake, and in New York with Bill Blass, Calvin Klein and other leading fashion houses.

Her further work as a couture stylist, which took her to locales including Milan, Florence and Madrid, also provided opportunities to hone her appreciation for art history and European design innovation. In addition to her fashion work, Vanessa has produced scores of interior and garden photo shoots as an editor and stylist for publications including Metropolitan Home, Sunset Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens and Garden Design while based in Miami, New York, Des Moines and San Francisco.

An opportunity to launch the SoHo branch of the contemporary Paris-based furniture gallery Neotu was her entrée into the contemporary international Interior Design community. She helped to establish a strong brand presence for the gallery in New York by planning collections and exhibitions, grooming press relationships, and supporting groundbreaking artists and influential clients.

After working with Neotu, Vanessa conceived and launched Sing Ken Ken, her own showrooms in New York and San Francisco. She imported furniture and accessories of her own design from Indonesia, and represented contemporary American artists and designers, and thus began her design career of working on interior spaces for clients.

Today, working between California, New York, and in between,  Vanessa has continued to nurture her passion for contemporary Interior Design, collaborating with clients to create their personal retreats. Her keen eye affords a relationship to look at each project as a new venture and an opportunity to find and create unique solutions and beautiful interiors.

                                     our clients speak their truth

Vanessa Murphy is a 5 STAR interior designer! She completed a redesign of my flat from the flooring to window treatments, furniture purchases and decorative items. Her professionalism, expertise, and attentiveness to details was outstanding. She provided a turnkey solution to my flat and stayed within my budget. She is reliable, trustworthy, and a gem to work with. She made the process incredibly smooth and easy with a minimum disruption to my living situation. Since I am maxed out on time, she handled things with a minimum amount of my time involved. I would recommend her without reservation. She is stellar!

Beth S., Co-Owner of San Francisco Public Relations firm

Vanessa is truly a pro, she has all the design discipline, a great eye for style, plenty of ideas and decoration guidance, but she never imposes her style on you. She listens to your needs and desires to make sensible recommendations to fit your lifestyle and personality, not her own.  I have a very busy work schedule, Vanessa is extremely reliable, she simply takes over all the sourcing, shopping and supervision of contractor work for me.  She constantly keeps me posted on the progress of the renovation projects, gets me involved in decision making, she makes sure there’s no surprises for anyone. Vanessa is professional yet personal. She is a joy to work with.

Vicky W., President + CEO of Advertising Agency

What people want today in any business is to be listened to, a spirit of collaboration and chemistry. And so it is working with Vanessa. Her life experiences, panoramic views of the world, love of peace and respect for humanity translate into creating an environment that is the real you, the one the world doesn’t see until you roll back the curtain and let them in. The one you find difficulty in expressing going it alone, but then there it is, the tranquility you’ve been longing for. Vanessa is a timeless gem!

Jamie C., Sr. VP, Wealth Management: Private firm

After working with Vanessa, I'm tempted to find a new place to live so I can use her again as an Interior Decorator. What a fantastic job she did redesigning our tiny apartment to make the living space comfortable. I can finally breathe! Equally important are the beautiful pieces of furniture she found. She used her own impeccable taste and listened to us to deliver the results we wanted. Her vision was spot on and our friends are blown away when they walk into our "new" apartment. I highly recommend her.

Kelly E. Carter, Editor, Haute Living Magazine, San Francisco

Vanessa is delightful to work with.  Her collaborative nature made our work together not only pleasant but informative and productive.  She brought her professional demeanor, skills and contacts to each project with excellent results.  Her attention to detail and organizational skills are very strong. She worked very well with the third member of our design team, our team architectural designer.
